How should I prepare my skin for needling?

How should I prepare my skin for needling? - SkinBay

Before starting your microneedling journey, there are certain skin preparations that should be taken before starting your treatments to ensure optimal results and minimise the risk of complications.

Avoid Sun Exposure

Prior to microneedling, it is important to avoid excessive sun exposure. Sunburned skin is not suitable for microneedling as it can increase the risk of post-treatment complications such as hyper-pigmentation. Make sure to use  a sunscreen such as La Clinica Sunscreen Lotion SPF50 and protective clothing to shield your skin from the sun's harmful rays.

Do Not Use Harsh Skincare Products

Avoid using harsh skincare products containing retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) in the days leading up to your microneedling treatment. These ingredients can irritate the skin and increase the risk of post-treatment inflammation and redness. Avoid for a minimum of 3 days prior.

Do Not Wax or Shave

It is recommended to avoid waxing or shaving the treatment area at least a week before microneedling. These hair removal methods can irritate the skin and potentially cause discomfort during the microneedling procedure. Opt for gentle hair removal techniques instead.

Avoid Blood-Thinning Medications

If you are taking blood-thinning medications or supplements, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider before undergoing microneedling. These medications can increase the risk of bruising and bleeding during the procedure, so it is crucial to follow your healthcare provider's recommendations.

Do Not Exfoliate Excessively

Excessive exfoliation can compromise the skin's barrier function and make it more susceptible to irritation during microneedling. Avoid using microdermabrasion, harsh exfoliants or scrubbing the skin vigorously in the days leading up to your treatment to prevent unnecessary irritation.

What products should I use?

It is recommended to use gentle, non-irritating products in the days leading up to your microneedling treatment. Look for products that are hydrating and strengthening you skin barrier function such as Hydrating and Healing Serum & Deep Hydration Moisture Cream, a strong skin barrier is a healthy canvas and will ensure you skin can withstand the microneedling better.

By following these precautions and avoiding certain activities before microneedling, you can help ensure a safe and effective treatment with minimal risk of complications.
