Microneedling FAQ — Everything You Need to Get Started
Microneedling FAQ
New to microneedling? We've answered the most common questions below to help you start your at-home journey with confidence.
Getting Started
What is microneedling?
Microneedling (also called collagen induction therapy) is a minimally invasive skin treatment that uses a device with fine needles to create tiny micro-channels in the skin. This stimulates your skin's natural healing response, boosting collagen and elastin production to improve texture, tone, and firmness over time.
What skin concerns can microneedling help with?
Microneedling is effective for a wide range of concerns including fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage, enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, stretch marks, and skin laxity.
Is microneedling safe to do at home?
Yes — when done correctly with the right equipment and proper hygiene protocols, at-home microneedling is safe and effective. Always follow the step-by-step guidance in our included Cosmetic Needling At-Home Guide PDF, and consult a skincare professional if you have any concerns before beginning.
How often should I microneedle?
For most people, once every 2–4 weeks is ideal. This gives your skin adequate time to heal and regenerate between sessions. Avoid over-treating — more is not better with microneedling.
The Equipment
What do I need to start microneedling at home?
You need four essentials:
- A microneedling pen — a professional-grade device with adjustable needle depth and speed
- Needle replacement cartridges — use a fresh cartridge every session for sterility and precision
- 1% Hyaluronic Acid Serum — applied during and after treatment to hydrate and support skin recovery
- Chlorhexidine Skin Prep Pads — to cleanse and sanitise the skin before every session
All four are included in our Starter Bundles — everything you need in one kit, saving you NZD $21.90 compared to buying separately.
Which microneedling pen should I choose?
We offer three pens to suit different needs:
- M8 — our bestseller. Reliable, effective, and perfect for beginners targeting fine lines, sun damage, and acne scars.
- A6S — features the thinnest-diameter needle cartridges available, ideal for precision treatment of sensitive or targeted areas.
- M8S — an advanced upgrade on the M8 with a three-snap fixed needle structure, built-in back-flow valve, and enhanced display panel for professional-grade results.
How often do I need to replace needle cartridges?
After every single session. Reusing cartridges compromises sterility and needle sharpness, which can cause skin damage and increase infection risk. Each of our Starter Bundles includes a 10-pack of replacement cartridges to get you started.
Why do I need Chlorhexidine prep pads?
Chlorhexidine is the clinical standard for pre-treatment skin sanitisation. It's fast-acting, broad-spectrum, and gentle enough for facial use. Skipping skin prep significantly increases the risk of infection — it's a non-negotiable step before every session.
Why is Hyaluronic Acid Serum used during microneedling?
The micro-channels created during treatment allow active ingredients to penetrate much deeper than normal. Hyaluronic acid is the ideal serum to use at this stage — it's deeply hydrating, supports skin recovery, and won't irritate sensitised skin. Avoid actives like retinol, vitamin C, or AHAs immediately post-treatment.
Treatment & Aftercare
Does microneedling hurt?
Most people experience mild discomfort — a light prickling or tingling sensation. The level of sensation depends on the needle depth used. Starting at a shallower depth and gradually increasing as your skin adapts is recommended for beginners.
What should I expect after a session?
Some redness and mild sensitivity is completely normal for 24–48 hours post-treatment. This is your skin's healing response at work. Avoid makeup, active skincare ingredients, and sun exposure during this period. Keep skin hydrated and protected.
Can I use my regular skincare products after microneedling?
Stick to gentle, hydrating products for at least 24–48 hours post-treatment. Avoid anything with retinol, vitamin C, AHAs, BHAs, or fragrances until your skin has fully recovered. Our 1% Hyaluronic Acid Serum is the perfect post-treatment product.
When will I see results?
Many people notice an immediate glow after their first session. More significant results — improved texture, reduced scarring, and firmer skin — typically become visible after 3–6 sessions over several weeks as collagen production increases.
